July 2017 – New York City takes the cake…..Literally!

Pier 36 hosted the 5th annual New York Cake Show which celebrated innovation and novelty within the entire baking community. Bakers and cake decorating connoisseurs from around the globe came together to showcase their work and to participate in contests and learning demonstrations.

The New York Cake Show was founded by Lisa Mansour – an award winning cake decorator who is also head of the New York Cake Academy, and co-owner of New York Cake & Baking Supply.

The New York Cake Show is also a learning experience where ideas were exchanged through hands on classes and exhibitions of the latest baking technologies. In fact, bakers at the cake show developed new skills and perspectives on baking that will enhance their “cake artistry” for years to come.

The theme of the New York Cake Competition was “Broadway” which also took place on the same day as the Tony Awards. One of the Tony Award winners, Bette Midler, was honored in flour and sugar with a “Hello Dolly” cake which was created by the divine Miss M’s favorite baker!

The best in show winner was Ashley Holt of “Sugar Monster Sweets” in Brooklyn for her “Kinky Boots” cake! Ashley’s life size replica of the play’s signature bright red high-heeled over the knee boot with gelatin sequins took four months of on-and-off work to create.

The New York Cake Show featured more than 200 extravagant creations with many that can sell for as much as 5,000, 10,000 dollars and even higher, and we can see why!
