May 2017 – It’s known around the globe as the fashion Oscars! NYC Vibe was on hand a celebrities filled the red carpet for the 2017 Met Gala.
Every year the Met Gala highlights a specific theme which is reflected in the designs that many choose to wear. This years theme is Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garcons: The Art of the In Between.
This year the designs on the red carpet were bold, bright and in many instances incorporated the color “Red” – Reflecting Rei Kawakubo’s famous quote “Red is Black”.
Rei Kawakubo is the first living designer since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 to be the sole subject of the Met’s most prestigious fashion Exhibit. 120 examples of Kawakubo’s womenswear designs – dating back to her first Paris runway show in 1981 to her most recent collection, are featured at this years exhibition.
Kawakubo’s work has challenged the conventional notions of fashion through her conceptual avant garde designs. The 74 year old Japanese fashion innovator is considered to be among the most influential designers today.
